PTA Announcements

PTA Fundraising Update:  The PTA has received wish lists from IMS teachers / staff and has also developed a 2-3 year plan for much needed improvements to the Library.  The PTA hopes to raise $450,000 this year from a variety of activities to fund high priority items.  Thanks to one IMS family who has donated $150,000, one third of our total goal!

The Family Phone Directory has been printed and will be distributed this week to all PTA families.

The Holiday Charity Drive produced almost 30 boxes of food and stationary products for St. James Settlement.  Thanks to everyone for their generosity!

The IMS Family Scavenger Hunt will be February 4:  Raise money for the PTA and have fun with your kids at the same time!  This kid-friendly scavenger hunt through HK Park, Admiralty and Central should be a really fun afternoon.  More information will be forthcoming in January, but please mark your calendars now!

Wanted: People and Things

This month, a focus on the library:  We need you!  We are in desperate need of more help in the library.  Please help – without 8-10 more parent volunteers (particularly at the Salvation Army), we may have to reduce library hours.  If you cannot commit to regular hours in the library, or prefer to help out from home, we have many one-off projects that need to be done (see below)!  Contact Doug at (dgandcd@netvigator.com) if you can help.

  • Can you manage a calendar? We have an urgent need for a library roster manager – this would take perhaps 2-3 hours a week of work and could be done from home.  Please contact Doug.

  • Do you read Chinese and pinyin?  We need help creating a better cataloguing method for the Chinese books in the library.  Please contact Doug.

  • Can you type and wrap?  Books cannot be used until they are covered, barcoded and entered into the computer system.  If you can spare us an afternoon, we can put more books in kids’ hands.  Contact Gloria at cloudten@netvigator.com.

  • Do you like music?  We would like someone to create write-ups for the 50+ CDs in the Library – these will help guide kids using the listening stations. Please contact Doug.

  • Do you like to work from home? If you have Windows XP and can work on your computer outside of school hours, we could use your help cleaning up the library database.  Please contact Doug.

Teachers periodically need supplementary materials – if you are interested in giving something directly to your child’s classroom, please contact your Class Parent about your class’s Wish List.

IMS PTA MISSION STATEMENT

The International Montessori School’s PTA represents parents’ interests at the IMS and exists to support the smooth running of the school, enriching where possible the life of the school for children and parents. The PTA consists of the parent body (membership is automatic) and a General Committee elected from within the parent body which includes members of the teaching staff and the school management. The composition of the current General Committee can be found below.

The General Committee administers and disburses the funds which you contribute. Currently this is fixed at HKD500 per family per year. Anyone can stand for election to the General Committee at the Annual General Meeting as long as their nomination is seconded by at least two other members of the PTA. Other offices on the General Committee may be filled during the school year according to the IMS PTA’s Constitution, copies of which are available to all parents.

 The PTA’s purpose is fourfold:

1)     To provide a forum for parents/guardians and teachers to exchange views for the overall benefit of pupils.

2)    To promote a sense of community amongst teachers, parents/guardians and pupils.

3) To encourage parents to participate actively in school programmes/activities.

4)    To raise funds for equipment/activities which enrich the life of the school.

The PTA coordinates social gatherings, fundraising activities and information evenings. It also finances extra curricular activities for the children, subsidises the annual Memory Book and organises fundraising events. It staffs the library with parent volunteers and supports the library with considerable monies, raised from the 2003 Annual Fundraising Dinner, which have allowed the purchase of a bar code reading system and a “core library” of essential books.

It’s your PTA and the PTA committee exists to help you as parents enter the life of the school. We always need volunteers, ideas, input – so please feel free to contact any member of the committee.

Resource List

Many parents new to Hong Kong are at a loss when it comes to finding a medical professional to address their children’s needs.  Yvonne Becher, a qualified child psychologist and IMS parent, has drafted a resource list of doctors, therapists, psychologists and other trained professionals.

The list is available on line - just click here.

Chinese Support for Non Chinese-Speaking Parents:

For non-Mandarin speaking parents, the task of supporting your child’s Chinese studies can be daunting at times. While non-Mandarin speakers may not be able to help directly with homework, Click here for other ways that you can assist your child with their Chinese.

Did you know there are currently over 3,500 English and Chinese books in the IMS library?
